La segunda parte de grabaciones del proyecto de Historia Oral de los Hispanos de Delaware fue presentada en el Museo de Arte de Delaware el 28 de mayo.

El objetivo del proyecto de historial oral de GACHA implica capturar en video y archivar la historia de los hispanos en Delaware. A través de una asociación con el Historiador i editor de El Tiempo Hispano, Gabriel Pilonieta y Alvina Quintana, profesora Asociada de la cátedra de estudios de la mujer Afroamericana y latina de la Universidad de Delaware, varios participantes fueron entrevistados y filmados. Durante el semestre de primavera el enfoque fue sobre “afro latinas”. La categoría Afro latina abarca a mujeres de descendencia Hispano/latina y Afromericana o que ha tenido ciertas experiencias de haber sido clasificada de este modo debido a sus contextura (trigueña/morena).

Este proyecto de historia oral se volvió parte de un proyecto final para 21 estudiantes de la Universidad de Delaware. Los estudiantes exploraron los vínculos entre la investigación y el activismo feminista, utilizando un ambiente de multi usuario llamado “Segunda Vida”, trabajo de campo en historia oral y producción en video.

Finalmente los estudiantes produjeron 9 videos diferentes de los cuales 6 fueron presentados el 28 de mayo en el Museo de Arte de Delaware, estos fueron: Naya Cruz-Currington por Stephanie Patterson & Jennifer Scalia; Nancy Lopez por Heather Richards & Laura Yarnal; Samanta Lopez, por Crystal Michielli & Brittany Richter; Lalena Luna por Grace Chou & Roxanne Horrel; Chandra Pitts por Kristen Roach & Morgan Vozobule; y Jari Santana-Wynn por Leah Meyer & Megan Whitehair.

También participaron como entrevistadas María Tere Villot por Kaitlin Baird & Jilian Finkelstein; Cristian Graciano por Alysha Mclauren, Tiffani Ross & Miagora Grayman; Maita Aros por Laura Keller & Stephanie Wiegard y Georgina Buchanan por Bianca Mojica & Katie Saya.

Despues de la exhibición Kristen Roach y Morgan Vozobule recibieron el premio  Manu Paloma Guerrero por su sobresaliente realización.

Las grabaciones originales serán parte de la colecciones especiales de la biblioteca Morris de la Universidad de Delaware uno de los socios del proyecto de historia oral.

Jari Santana-Wynn, una de las entrevistadas explico que, “haber sido invitada para participar en este proyecto de historia oral de la afro latinas fue un honor y un privilegio para mí. Como una inmigrante, mujer minoritaria, madre y científica social, entiendo el inconmensurable valor positivo que los modelos de conducta de baja ges culturales semejantes tienen en las jóvenes de la minoría. Este proyecto significa que nuestra historia no será olvidada y que la fundación que estamos ahora edificando será un peldaño de piedra para las jóvenes, hermosas, inteligentes y poderosas afro latinas que vendrá detrás de nosotras. Me sentí enriquecida e inspirada a plenitud por las entrevistas de las magnificas mujeres que participaron. Espero que mi entrevista toque e inspire a otras a ser abogadas y darle voz a aquellas cuya voz es poco escuchada.”

Latinas Speak Out

The second set of recordings of Delaware Hispanic  Oral History Project was screened at the Delaware Art Museum on May 28.

The goal of the GACHA history project involves capturing on film and archiving Hispanic Delawarean history. Through a partnership, with Gabriel Pilonieta, historian and editor of El Tiempo Hispano bilingual newspaper and Alvina Quintana University of Delaware Associate Professor, Black American, Latin American & Women’s Studies, participants were interviewed and filmed. During the 2009 spring semester the focus was on stories from “Afro-latinas”. The category “Afro-latinas”. Signifies a woman who is of Hispanic/Latino and African American descent or a woman, who has had certain life experiences by being classified as such due to her complexion (trigueña/Morena).

This oral history project became part of a capstone project for 21 students at the University of Delaware. The students explored the links between research and feminism activism, utilizing the multi-user environment “Second Life, oral history field work and video production.

Finally the students produced 9 different videos, and were screening 6 of them featuring Naya Cruz-Currington by Stephanie Patterson & Jennifer Scalia; Nancy Lopez by Heather Richards & Laura Yarnal; Samanta Lopez, by Crystal Michielli and Brittany Richter; Lalena Luna By Grace Chou & Roxanne Horrel; Chandra Pitts by Kristen Roach & Morgan Vozobule; and Jari Santana-Wynn by Leah Meyer & Megan Whitehair.

One of the women participants Jari Santana-Wynn, explained that, “Having been invited to participate in the Afro-Latina Oral History Project was an honor and a privilege for me.  As an immigrant, minority woman, mother, and social scientist, I understand the immeasurable value of positive role models of similar ethno-cultural backgrounds to young minority women.  This project means that our history will not be forgotten and that the foundation that we are now laying will serve as a stepping stone to the young, beautiful, smart and powerful Afro-Latinas who will come after us.  I was greatly enriched and inspired by the interviews of the other magnificent women who participated.  I hope that my interview will touch and inspire others to become advocates and give voice to those whose voices are seldom heard.”
