The Colonial School District's second attempt to pass a $10.9 million per year referendum was successful Tuesday, giving the school district the money it needs to recall several laid-off employees and avoid large program cuts.

“This is a victory for our students and dedicated staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Dusty Blakey in a statement. “I want to thank voters who showed they believe in the great work we are doing for the 10,000 students in our district by voting for the referendum.”

Nearly twice as many people showed up at the polls as the last referendum.

He went on to say the vote shows the community understands the importance of education and supporting local students. It also means the district will be able to continue operating normally and maintain current staffing levels.

"It means our kids win," Blakey said. "It allows us all as a community to keep doing what's best for kids."

A total of 5,742 voted in favor of the referendum, while 3,880 voted against it, according to unofficial results.

Turnout for this referendum significantly outpaced turnout for an earlier referendum in February — with 9,622 votes versus 5,028 — perhaps due to the enormity of the proposed cuts.
