Día de Movilización de Votantes

Patrocinado por la Alianza del Campus La Raza y Voces sin Fronteras el martes 4 de noviembre 2008.

El propósito de este día de movilización de votantes fue movilizar a la comunidad con bajo representación en Wilmington con el fin de que votaran el día de las elecciones. Queríamos crear conciencia sobre la importancia de la participación cívica a través de tocarle las puertas a la gente y recordarles que fueran a votar. También distribuimos información sobre los centros de votación más cercanos y sobre sus derechos como votantes. Además, les ofrecimos llevarlos a los centros de votación. Un grupo de cuatro voluntarios de Alianza del Campus La Raza y cuatro voluntarios de Voces sin Fronteras se dividieron en dos grupos y movilizaron votantes el área de Hilltop en Wilmington así como también en la comunidad de Elsmere.

Estuvimos golpeando puertas desde las 10:30AM a las 1:30PM

Cuando llamamos a las puertas en Wilmington, casi todo el mundo dijo ya haber votado o estar en camino a su centro de votación. Aquellos que dijeron que no votaron fue porque estaban inhabilitados por haber sido condenados por un delito o no cumplir con los requisitos de ciudadanía. Nos impresiono la cantidad de gente que no pudo votar a causa de su estatus legal. También estuvimos sorprendidos y muy entusiasmados por la respuesta positiva que recibimos de la comunidad de Wilmington. Nos agradecieron que les tocáramos sus puertas y estaban felices de ver que nos tomábamos el tiempo para llevar a la gente a votar.

En la comunidad de Elsmere, nos sorprendió la cantidad de gente que no sabia donde podrían votar. Afortunadamente estuvimos en capacidad de facilitar a estos individuos la información de donde podían votar en Elsmere.

Voter Mobilization Day

The purpose of Voter Mobilization Day was to mobilize the underrepresented community in Wilmington in order to encourage them to vote on Election Day. We wanted to raise awareness about the importance of civic participation by knocking on people’s doors and reminding them to get out and vote. We also provided information about the nearest polling locations and their rights as voters. In addition, we also offered people rides to the polls. A group of four Campus Alliance de La Raza volunteers and four Voices Without Borders volunteers split up into two groups and mobilized voters in the Hilltop area of Wilmington as well as the Elsmere community. We were knocking on doors from 10:30AM-1:30PM

When we knocked on the doors in Wilmington, almost everyone said that they had already voted or were on their way to the polls. Those who said they did not vote were unable to because they were either convicted felons or did not meet the citizenship requirements. We were shocked by the amount of people who were unable to vote because of their felony status. We were also surprised and very excited about the positive feedback that we were receiving from the Wilmington community. They thanked us for knocking on their doors and were happy to see us taking the time to get people to vote.

In the Elsmere community, we were surprised by the amount of people who did not know where they could vote. Fortunately, were we able to provide these individuals with information about where they could vote in Elsmere.
