Si yo tuviera una varita mágica para detener el mundo, creo que no la usaría.

Si yo tuviera una varita mágica para detener el mundo, creo que no la usaría. Prefiero verlo girar sin límites y oscilando entre el día y la noche, el invierno y el verano, entre lo bueno y lo malo.

Si usara la varita mágica, entonces no podría disfrutar de las cosas buenas de la vida, ver por ejemplo, como mi amiga María se recupera con alegría de un maléfico cáncer; o celebrar 25 años de aventuras con la compañera de mi vida; maravillarme ante cada amanecer y soñar con cada atardecer.

Sí, en verdad, nunca usaría esa varita mágica para parar el mundo.

Pero si en verdad pudiera usar un implemento mágico de esa naturaleza, me gustaría ver reducida a cero la violencia, que se ha vuelto cotidiana y cada vez más cerca de cada uno de nosotros.

Muchas veces me pregunto, ¿en manos de quién está disminuir el crimen y la violencia?, muchos pensamos que esa es una tarea exclusiva de la policía; en verdad yo no estoy de acuerdo.

Por una parte, la policía debería existir para prevenir y, no como recurso de fuerza a la que se le ve arrinconada en estos últimos tiempos en los que se cometen tantos actos criminales casi ninguno sin resolver. El papel de la policía se limita, al parecer, a levantar el reporte del incidente y nada más.

No trato, por supuesto de decir que la policía no hace nada para combatir el crimen, sino más bien que nosotros no hacemos tanto para que no haya tantos crímenes.

En días pasado me dediqué a hacer una recopilación de hechos criminales, y la lista pasó por un sujeto que golpeó a su novia y se supo después que era traficante de drogas; más tarde siete hispanos fueron asaltados pasada la medianoche y con toda impunidad sin ubicarse a los culpables; luego un par de muchachos fueron apuñalados al salir de una heladería (cosa de gangas dice la policía); mas tarde un inmigrante indocumentado amenaza con un arma de mentiras a un policía, mientras bebía cerveza y lanzaba las botellas a la calle y fue detenido; dos jóvenes de Wilmington fueron ultimados a balazos en Newport y la policía lo vincula al tráfico de drogas, aunque la familia lo niega enfáticamente; tiroteos en diferentes calles de Wilmington; dos hispanos de New York atrapados robando ropa luego de que les detuvieran por no usar el cinturón de seguridad y la noche del martes 16 de junio, un joven de 20 años llega abaleado al hospital de Wilmington, se negó a decir nada sobre el tema. Y esto es sólo una parte de los reportes de los últimos 30 días. Muchas cosas mas sucedieron y no eran buenas precisamente, en todas algún hispano estuvo implicado como víctima o victimario.

Así que, si tuviera esa varita mágica, la utilizaría para iluminar la mente y el corazón de estas personas, que están haciendo insufribles nuestras calles, borrando la sonrisa a los niños que deben mirar continuamente a su espalda cuando salen a comprar un helado a la esquina, y embarga de tristeza a tantas madres que ven sus hijos perder la vida o ir a la cárcel.

If I had a magic wand to stop the world, I don’t think I’d use it.

If I had a magic wand to stop the world, I don’t think I’d use it. I’d rather see it spin limitlessly and fluctuate between day and night, winter and summer, good and bad.

If I were to use a magic wand, then I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the good things that life throws my way. For example, my friend Maria happily recuperating from an evil cancer, or celebrating 25 years of adventure with my life partner, or marveling at every sunrise and dreaming with every sunset.

Yes, truly, I would never use that magic wand to stop the world.

But if I really could use an instrument of magic, I would like to see violence, which has become an everyday matter growing closer to each one of us, reduced to zero.

Many times I ask myself, in the hands of whom is the responsibly to diminish crime and violence? Many of us think that is an exclusive task for the police, though I truly do not agree.

On one hand, the police should exist to prevent, but not as a tool of enforcement which has been cornered in recent times, in which so many unresolved criminal acts are committed. The role of the police, it seems, is to simply document the incident on a report, file it away, and that’s the end of it.

I am not trying to say, of course, that the police are doing nothing to fight crime, but otherwise that we don’t do enough to stop the crime from happening.

A few days ago, I dedicated my time to compiling police reports, and the list of events included an individual who hit his girlfriend and later, it was learned that he was a drug dealer; seven male Hispanics were assaulted after midnight with all impunity and the attackers are still at large; then a couple of youngsters were stabbed when leaving an ice cream shop (gang related, according to the police); later, an undocumented immigrant threatened a policeman with a fake weapon while he was drinking beer, throwing the empty bottles haphazardly into the street, and was detained; two Wilmington residents were shot to death in Newport and even though the police relate the crimes to drug trafficking, the family denies it emphatically; shootings on different streets in Wilmington; a married couple, Hispanic New Yorkers, were caught stealing only after not wearing their seatbelts at a checkpoint on their way back home; and the night of Tuesday, June 16^th, a 20 year old man arrived at Wilmington hospital, suffering from bullet wounds, refusing to talk about how they got there.

These are only a few of the reports from the past 30 days. Many other things happened, none of them precisely good. In all of them, a Hispanic was involved, whether a victim or attacker.

So, if I had that magic wand, I would use it to illuminate the minds and hearts of the people that are creating such insufferable streets, sweeping the smile from children who must continually check their backs while buying ice cream, and causing so many mothers to cry over their children losing their lives or going to jail.
