“40 Años de Woodstock”

Es fascinante ver que esta generación está tan fascinada con la música y la moda que hasta hoy en día ha influenciado nuestro mercado por cuatro décadas. Hace solo una semana un amigo me dijo que el había estado en Woodstock y vio y escuchó a Jimy Hendrix tocando su guitarra, a Joe Cocker cantando con su voz profunda y cuan “divertido” fue todo el fin de semana, y entonces una sonrisa se dibujo en su cara, esa clase de sonrisa que deja saber que debiste estar allí para entender completamente el asunto. Entonces, tengo mi hijo de 19 años quien es un inspirado músico, toca guitarra, piano, trompeta y todos sus ídolos musicales son cantantes y bandas icónicos de ese género.

Por ahora, no es una sorpresa para mis lectores el que yo haya crecido con una mama “Hippie” o también llamada “hija de las flores” y aun y cuando vivía en Londres cuando Woodstock tuvo lugar, todavía recuerdo con claridad todas las conversaciones y escuchando la música del concierto.

Las imágenes del concierto eran irreales para mí y en mi mente de siete años tan solo podía pensar “ ¿porqué la gente se esta comportando de esa manera? Y mi favorita es ¿Porqué están desnudos y jugando en el barro? Como pueden ver, era una niña de siete años viendo todo esto como un comportamiento fuera de lugar, pero la mujer de 47 años que soy hoy me hubiese encantado sentir esa experiencia libertaria, rodeada de cientos de personas sin que te importe el mundo, pura alegría de estar en paz con el universo y el disfrute de escuchar esa maravilla de artistas. La revista Rolling Stone define a Woodstock como uno de los 50 momentos que cambiaron la historia del Rock and Roll. Si, ese fin de semana tal como lo anunciaron en aquel entonces fue una “feria de Música y Arte” así como también una “exposición acuariana” y tres días de Paz y Música,” pero la historia probo que fue algo más. Hoy en el sitio original hay una placa que conmemora el concierto y el campo donde estuvo el escenario original y también hay un poste totémico con grabados de Janis Joplin, Jimy Hendrix y Jerry Garcia.

40 años desde Woodstock, han hecho de la granja Yasgur un lugar al que gente de todas las generaciones disfruta visitando. Hubo 32 actuaciones en el lluvioso fin de semana y se reporto que este concierto al aire libre tuvo mas de 400.000 asistentes. Ayer me dijo mi hijo “Mama, te voy a llevar al aniversario 50 de Woodstock porque voy a  estar tocando en la tarima y quiero que me veas,” caramba! Espero que este sueño se haga realidad. Aca vamos por Woodstock y un tiempo de música y paz!

Is fascinating to see that this generation is so taken by the music and the fashion that till this day has influenced our market for four decades. Just last week a friend of mine told me he had been to Woodstock and that he saw and heard Jimmy Hendrix play his guitar, Joe Cocker sing with his raspy voice and how much “fun” the whole weekend was, and then a smile drew his face, the kind of smile that let you know you had to be there in order to fully understand it all. Then, I have my 19-year-old son who is an inspiring musician, he plays guitar, piano and the trumpet and all of his music idols are icons singers and bands from that genre. By now, is no surprise to my readers that I grew up with a mother that was a “hippie” or also known as a “flower child” and even though we lived in London at the time that Woodstock took place, I still can clearly remember all the talking and listening to the music of the concert. The images of the concert were unreal to me and in my seven year old mind I could only think “why are people behaving in that way?” and my favorite one is  “why are they naked and playing with mud?” As you can see, it was a seven year old looking at all of this as an inappropriate behavior, but the 47 year old woman I am today would have loved to have felt such a freeing experience, surrounded hundreds of people with no care in the world, but the pure joy of being at peace with the universe and the enjoyment of listening to such a wonderful line-up of artist. The Rolling Stone magazine defines Woodstock concert as one of the 50 moments that changed the history of Rock and Roll. Yes, that weekend as they advertised back then, was to be a “Music and Art Fair” as well as an “Aquarian Exposition,” and “3 days of Peace and Music,” but history proved that it was more than that. Today at the original site, there is a plaque that commemorates the concert at the field where the original stage was and there is also a totem pole with woodcarvings of Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix and Jerry Garcia. 40 years since Woodstock, has made of the Yasgur farm a place where people of all generations enjoy visiting. There were thirty-two acts performed in that three day rainy weekend and it was reported that this outdoor concert event had more than 400,000 people attendance, creating massive traffic and disruption to the quiet town of Bethel that is 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock. Yesterday, my son said to me “mom, I will be taking you to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock because I will be playing on stage and I want you to see me play,” wow, I hope his dream comes true. Here is to Woodstock and a time of music and peace!
