Emily Bryant, Estudiante Lider

Emily Bryant es alguien que no necesita introducción. Después de leer su curriculum se puede ver como ha tenido éxito hasta ahora. Ahora esta en la edad de votar por primera vez en su vida.

Emily Bryant nació y creció en Wilmington, Delaware. Sus abuelos emigraron de Cuba en 1961.

Emily se gradúo en la Secundaria de Brandywine con un promedio de 3.87, tomando 8 clases de honor y 10 cursos preuniversitarios. Estuvo involucrada en muchas actividades extracurriculares, incluyendo cross country, natación, Club de Español, Sociedad Nacional Hispana de Honor, Liga de matemáticas, banda del distrito por 4 años, y capitana del equipo de lacrosse. Fue presidenta tanto de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor como de la Sociedad Nacional Hispana de Honor. Emily fue también la ganadora del premio a la excelencia en matemáticas y ciencias AAUW y asistió a la escuela para la Excelencia de la gobernación. Emily es descrita por otros como que tiene un “solido entendimiento de la importancia de la diversidad y de resolver los problemas de la pobreza, una excelente comprensión del liderazgo y sus retos, y de la importancia unir a la gente para efectuar cambios.” Ha trabajado en la Junta Directiva de la Juventud de la Fundación Comunitaria de Delaware y fue también seleccionada como la Mejor Estudiante Hispana del año 2008.

Después de recibir el premio a la mejor estudiante hispana, el siguiente verano tuvo el privilegio de trabajar en el programa de liderazgo juvenil  del Banco de America y hacer un trabajo de internado en el Centro Comunitario Latinoamericano. Asistió a la Conferencia de Lideres Estudiantiles en Washington DC la cual le enseñó sobre las diferencias entre el gobierno, el sector privado y las organizaciones sin fines de lucro. También aprendió destrezas muy importantes en los negocios, tales como escribir un discurso, modales al comer y muchas otras normativas sociales de negocios.

En la actualidad Emily asiste al  Swarthmore College en Pensilvania.

En su futuro planea trabajar y ayudar en la comunidad. “Me gustaría ayudar a los hispanos con las barreras del lenguaje así como ayudar a la comunidad de inmigrantes indocumentados. El problema es la falta de recursos y su poco entendimiento de lo que les rodea,” así que a ella le gustaría ayudar en ese sentido.

Sus padres la apoyan en todo lo que hace. Su madre, quien ha sido voluntaria en el LACC, tiene una gran influencia en las decisiones que toma. “Mis padres han sido grandiosos. Ellos me han demostrado a través de mi vida que dando de vuelta a los demás es la mejor manera de andar por la vida.” Cuando se le pregunta cuales son sus modelos, Emily replica que sus abuelos. Su abuela no hablaba ingles cuando llego a los Estados Unidos y le tomo 7 años graduarse de la universidad teniendo 4 hijos durante este tiempo. También sus padres tiene un fuerte impacto en su vida. Toda la familia concuerda en la importancia de poner a la familia primero y lograr la mejor educación. Todos le demuestran mucho cariño y la apoyan en todo lo que hace.

El sueño de Emily para el futuro es ver a Delaware con un gobierno fuerte y una mejor calidad de vida.

Hablando sobre Emily, Maria matos Directora Ejecutiva del LACC dijo, “habiendo conocido a Emily durante su pasantía del verano yo podría agregar: brillante, inquisitiva, creativa y muy motivada para lograr el éxito. Ella sabe donde va y como llegar allí.”

Emily resume su experiencia en el centro Latinoamericano con estas palabras, “ No solo he trabajado en un empleo, sino que me he unido a una familia. No pienso que vuelva a ser la misma persona. He mejorado no solo mi español sino que he madurado, al mismo tiempo creo que he modificado completamente mi perspectiva de nuestra comunidad.”

Emily Bryant, Student Leader

Emily Bryant is one who needs no introduction. After reading her resume you can see how successful she has been up until now. She is now at the age where she can vote for the first time in her life.

Emily Bryant was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. Her grandparents emigrated here from Cuba in 1961.

Emily graduated from Brandywine High School, with a weighted GPA of 3.87, taking 8 honors classes, and 10 AP courses. She was involved with many extracurricular activities, including cross country, swimming, Spanish club, Spanish National Honor Society, Math League, all-district band for four years, and captain of her varsity lacrosse team.

She was President of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.  Emily was also a winner of the AAUW Award for Excellence in Math and Science and attended the Governor’s School for Excellence.  Emily is described by others as having a “solid understanding of the importance of diversity and solving poverty issues, an excellent grasp of leadership and its challenges, and the importance of rallying people to affect change.”  She served on the Youth Philanthropy Board of the Delaware Community Foundation and was also selected the Outstanding Hispanic Female Student of 2008. 

After receiving the Outstanding Hispanic Female Student Award, the following summer she had the privilege to work with Bank of America’s Student Leader’s Program and did some intern work with the LACC. Emily had to go through a simple application process with Bank of America to get into the program. She attended the Student Leader’s Conference in Washington DC, which taught her about the difference between the government, the private sector, and non-profit organizations. Also, she learned many important business skills, such as writing a speech, eating properly, and many other business etiquettes. Emily is now attending Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.

In her future, she plans on working and helping in the community. “I would like to help out Hispanics with the language barrier as well as helping out undocumented immigrants. The problem is they lack resources and they don’t understand their surroundings,” so she would like to help them with that.

Her parents support her with everything she does. Her mother, who volunteered at the LACC, greatly influences the decisions she makes. “My parents have been great. They’ve showed me throughout my life that giving back to others is the way to go.” When asked who her role models are, Emily replies that her grandparents are her role models. Her grandmother spoke no English when she first arrived in the US. It took her 7 years to graduate from the University of Delaware having 4 kids along the way. Also, her parents have had a strong impact in her life. Her entire family stresses the importance of putting family first and getting a higher education. They all show so much love to her and support her in everything she does. Emily’s dream for the future is to see Delaware with a stronger government and a higher quality of life.

Speaking about Emily, Maria Matos Executive Director of the LACC said, “getting to know Emily during the summer internship I would add:  bright, inquisitive, creative and highly motivated to achieve success” She knows where she’s going and how to get there! “

Emily summed up her experience at the LACC with these words, “I have not just worked at a job, I have joined a family. I do not think I will ever be the same person. I have not only improved my Spanish and become more mature, but I believe I have completely reshaped my perspective of our community”
