Resultar ganadora del Programa de Reconocimiento Hispano de Delaware 2009 como la mejor estudiante de secundaria del estado no es suficiente para Marta Lopez.

Con sus 14 años Marta, nativa de Tenanzingo, estado de México, tiene muchas cosas en su mente mientras asiste a Gauger-Cobbs Middle School, en Newark. Su padre trabaja en pavimento y su madre es supervisora en el turno de noche de una tienda por departamentos, y su hermana menor está en la escuela primaria. “Siento que haber ganado este reconocimiento es un gran logro, es haber cumplido con mi comunidad, un orgullo de cómo me gustaría que seamos vistos los hispanos, en lugar del lente de los estereotipos de gente mala y vendedores de drogas, al demostrar que tenemos algo bueno que compartir con la comunidad,” dice Marta.

Cuando Marta vino de México de 5 años, hablaba y escribía en español sin ningún conocimiento de inglés y su madre la metió en una escuela donde sólo se hablaba inglés; durante los primeros meses, al no entender nada de lo que le estaban diciendo llegaba llorando a su casa. Poco a poco empezó a vincular palabras y objetos hasta que dio el gran salto en el que se siente cómoda con el idioma. “Me siento realizada, pero no satisfecha” dice la brillante jovencita.

Apenas logro cierta fluidez con el idioma, empezó a formar parte de grupos como “Bussines Professionals of America”, o la Escuela para Estudiantes Avanzados en Ciencias y Matemáticas de Delaware Tech. Para Marta es emocionante ir a las universidades de Harvard y Cornell durante este verano, pasando por el Museo de Ciencias de New York, todo un mundo de aventuras que empezó el 16 de junio cuando viajó a Dallas, Texas con “Bussines Professionals of America.” Y agrega: “este año gané el segundo lugar en el estado y el año pasado el primero en la nación en Excel. En esta competencia se prueba la habilidad para manejar el programa Excel y se toma en cuenta la exactitud y el tiempo que se lleva en hacerlo. Me encantan la matemáticas pero quiero ser cirujana oral en el futuro.”

Marta es apasionada de la lógica y por eso le gustaría una carrera que le demande pensar ordenadamente, tener todo a punto ante los problemas que se ponen ante uno. Recuerda con cariño a su tía Mirtala, quien es actuaria matemática, y tiene una mentalidad muy lógica y resuelve problemas muy rápido. “Ella es mi modelo” dice Marta.

En este momento de su vida sólo quiere concentrase en estudiar metódicamente y prepararse para el futuro. “Ser una mujer hispana es difícil, la gente asume cosas de ti como que vas a salir embarazada y te va s a quedar así; pero no es así, la jueza Sotomayor es un ejemplo, además siendo bilingües tenemos mas oportunidades y debemos sacar provecho de ello, “ explica con orgullo. En muchas oportunidades le han ofrecido drogas y siempre les dice a sus amigos “piensen en cuantas familias están arruinando.” Finalmente la inteligente jovencita comenta que Dios es muy importante en su vida y le da “fe en un mejor futuro, El siempre me ayuda.”

Being the winner of the 2009 Hispanic Recognition Program as the outstanding hispanic middle school student of the year is just not enough for Marta Lopez.

At 14 years of age, Marta, born in Tenanzingo, Mexico, has many things on her mind while attending Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark. Her father works in the paving industry and her mother is a night shift supervisor in a department store, her little sister is currently going to elementary school. “I feel that winning this award is a great achievement, to have accomplished something for my community, a pride that I hope all the Hispanics can see instead of the stereotype of the Hispanic people being a group of bad role models or drug dealers. I’m demonstrating that we have something positive to share with the community,” says Marta.

When Marta came from Mexico, at 5 years old, she spoke and wrote in Spanish and had no knowledge of English, still her mother enrolled her in a school where no Spanish was spoken. The first months, without understanding of anyone around her, she would come home crying, but little by little she began to link words and objects until she made a complete connection with the language, which she is now totally comfortable with. “I am proud of what I’ve accomplished, though still not satisfied” says the brilliant young lady.

As soon as she became fluent with the language she started to join such groups as “Business Professionals of America” and a school for advanced students in science and math at Delaware Tech. For Marta, it is exciting to visit colleges and universities such as Harvard and Cornell, going to the science museum in New York, a whole world of adventures which began on June 16^th when she traveled to Dallas, Texas with Business Professionals of America. “This year I won the second place statewide and last year the first place nationwide. This competition tests the ability to handle excel programs and it also tests the precision and timing it takes for you to accomplish certain tasks. I love math but I would like to be an oral surgeon in the future.”

Marta is passionate about logic and that’s why she would like a career that would allow her to use her skills to think orderly, and be prepared for the problems that she’s faced with. She kindly remembers her aunt Mirtala who is a mathematical actuary, has a very logical mind, and is able to solve problems with a swiftness, “she is my role model” says Marta.

At this point in her life, she just wants to concentrate on studying methodically and getting ready for the future. “Being a Hispanic woman is difficult. People expect things from you such as getting pregnant, and that’s the end of you, but it’s not like that. Look at, for example, Judge Sotomayor. Besides, being bilingual, we have more opportunities and we must take advantage of those,” says Marta. She tells us that she has been offered drugs on many occasions and has declined with a phrase “think of how many families you are ruining.” Finally, the smart young lady says that God is very important in her life and provides her with “faith in a better future. He is always there for me”
