“Parte de ese Momento”

En este momento en todo el mundo se sabe que nuestro país tiene un nuevo Presidente electo, Barack Obama y un Vicepresidente, Joe Biden del propio Delaware.

En este momento en todo el mundo se sabe que nuestro país tiene un nuevo Presidente electo, Barack Obama y un Vicepresidente, Joe Biden del propio Delaware. El 4 de noviembre ser un día recordado en la historia y yo tengo que vivir y ser parte de ese momento. El martes empezó como cualquier otro día, había organizado mi día lleno de mi usual lista de “cosas por hacer.” El asunto mas importante era recoger a mi hijo para que pudiéramos ir a votar juntos. Esta era su primera oportunidad de votar, y me sentí honrada de que el quisiera compartir conmigo ese momento. Como buen hijo de su madre, el expresa cualquier emoción que tiene sin mirar para atrás. Mientras yo estaba ejerciendo mi voto en la privacidad del sitio de votación, oí a Edward diciendo en voz alta desde su propio sitio “Oh Dios, si hay verdaderamente mas de dos partidos por los cuales escoger, hay partido socialista-comunista y el partido verde.” Me tuve que reir y replicarle en ese tono maternal “shhiiito Edward el voto es privado y en silencio!.” No necesito decir que me estaba riendo por dentro, todo esto era nuevo para el y había muchas decisiones, especialmente esta vez nuestro estado estaba tambien eligiendo un nuevo Gobernador, teniente Gobernador, Representantes Estatales, Senadores del Estado y los Consejos locales Le agradecí el haber compartido ese momento conmigo y el dijo “solo espero que haya tomado las decisiones correctas y desde que vote, tengo el derecho de expresar mi opinión si Obama no trae el cambio que ha estado prometiendo y también Jack Markell.” Caramba, mi hijo voto por todos mis candidatos, pero ni una vez le dije por quien votar, el hizo su propia voluntad. Antes de dejarlo en la casa, fui a trabajar como voluntaria por mis cuatro horas en el centro de votación. Yo estaba saludando a los votantes y a pocos pasos de mi lugar estaba Nancy Wagner quien la representante del Distrito 31 del Estado por el partido republicano y a mi lado esta su retador Darryl Scott del partido demócrata, al menos eso pensé yo. En realidad era el hermano idéntico de Darryl quien vino de Austin, Texas para apoyar a su hermano y familia en esta importante ocasión. Tuvimos una gran conversación, pero nunca leí un botón que llevaba que decía: “Soy David, el hermano gemelo de Darryl Scott,” muchacho me dio vergüenza pero también me reí bastante de eso. Después de una hora o algo así, Darryl Scottt y su esposa Carol reemplazaron a David y este fue mi primer encuentro cara a cara con el hombre que ahora Serra el recién electo Representante Estatal por mi distrito. Es un verdadero caballero, ese tipo que es raro y difícil de encontrar en nuestros días y cuando conoce a Carol no puedes ayudar sino pensar que los dos realmente son una buena pareja. Hablamos de muchos temas que nos preocupan en nuestro distrito, el estado,  la comunidad hispana y la nación, siempre interrumpiendo nuestra conversación con el fin de saludar a los votantes y agradecerles por votar.

Darryl Scott viene con la visión  y la pasión que se necesita para hacer que suceda el “cambio” tal como Jack Markell y Barack Obama. Es emocionante formar parte de este momento en el tiempo y creer en las profundas palabras y el elocuente discurso que dio  el nuevo Presidente electo en el cual mis ojos se llenaron de lágrimas y mi corazón de regocijo. Felicitaciones a todos los candidatos victoriosos y vencidos en esta fabulosa campaña electoral. El verdadero trabajo duro esta adelante, esto es solo el principio!

“Part of that Moment”

By now the whole world knows that our country has a new elected President, Barack Obama, and Vice President, Delaware’s own Joe Biden

By now the whole world knows that our country has a new elected President, Barack Obama, and Vice President, Delaware’s own Joe Biden. November 4^th 2008 will be a day remembered in history and I got to live and take part of that moment in time. Tuesday begun like any other day, I had orchestrated my day to be filled with my usual “to do” list. The most important item was to pick up my son so we could vote together. This is the first time for him voting, and I felt honored he wanted to share with me this special moment. As son of his mother that he is, he expresses whatever emotions he has without holding back. As I was casting my vote in the privacy of my voting booth I heard Edward say out laud from his own booth “Oh my god, there’s truly more that two parties to choose from, there is a socialist-communist party and a green-turtle party.” I had to laugh and reply in a motherly tone “Shhh, Edward, voting is silent and private!” Needless to say I was laughing inside, this was all new to him and there were so many choices, specially this time our state was also electing a new Governor, Lt. Governor, State Representatives, State Senators, and local County Council. I thanked him for sharing that moment with me and he said “I just hope I made all the right choices and since I voted, I have the right to express my opinion if Obama does not carry out the changes he is promising and also Jack Markell.” Wow, my son voted for all of my candidates, but never did I once told him whom to vote for, he did it out of his own free will. After dropping him off at home, I went to serve my four hours of volunteering at the voting place. I was greeting voters and a few feet from where I was standing was 31^st District State Representative, Nancy Wagner from the Republican Party and next to me was the running challenger Darryl Scott from the Democratic Party, well so I thought. Actually, it was Darryl’s identical twin brother David who came all the way from Austin, Texas to support his brother and family in this important occasion. We had great conversations, but never did I read a button that he was wearing that read: “I am David, twin brother of Darryl Scott,” boy did I feel silly, but had great laughs from it. After an hour or so, Darryl Scott and his wife Carol released David and this was my first time meeting face to face the man that now became my district’s newly Elected State Representative. He is a true gentleman, the kind that are rare and hard to come by nowadays and when you meet Carol you can’t help but to think they both make a match. We spoke of many topics that are of concerns in our district, state, Hispanic community and nation, always interrupting our conversation in order to greet voters and thanked them for voting. Darryl Scott is coming with the vision and the passion that is needed to make “change” happen just as Jack Markell and Barack Obama. It is exciting to be part of this moment in time and to believe in the profound words and eloquent speech that our new elected President gave in which filled my eyes with tears and my heart with joy. Congratulations to all victorious and the non-victorious candidates for a wonderful race. The true hard work is ahead, this is only the beginning!
