Me pregunto si todos se están preguntando  ¿Cuándo se terminará la nieve?

Me pregunto si todos se están preguntando  ¿Cuándo se terminará la nieve? como yo lo hago en este momento. En los 25 años que he vivido en Delaware no he visto tanta nieve. Sí, acepto que han habido algunas nevadas grandes, pero esas ni se notaban una vez que las calles se limpiaban y uno podía continuar con sus actividades del día a día. De alguna manera en este invierno, la madre naturaleza ha decidido regalarle a nuestra región tormentas de nieve. No una, pero dos tormentas seguidas que nos han dejado con cantidades de nieve que exceden todo record. Sí, estoy un poco frustrada por la claustrofobia que estoy experimentando. No me mal interpreten, amo la nieve. Me encanta jugar en ella, haciendo ángeles y corriendo descalza en mi patio para sentirme joven y viva; pero este invierno se está volviendo un poco pesado para mí. Pero, si me conoces sabes que trato de pensar positivamente y ver los lados bueno de la vida, de esta manera he conseguido divertirme. Si, un grupo de amigas, incluyendo a mi hija y mi mamá, y yo nos pusimos nuestros trajes de baño y nos tomamos fotos en la nieve solo para montarlas en nuestras páginas de facebook. Todo empezó como un reto, pero me quedé impresionada al ver que todos se involucraron y terminó siendo un juego. Ahora estamos considerando hacer un calendario para recordar el y invierno del 2010 y sus famosas tormentas de nieve. Está de más decir que he sido afortunada al tener electricidad y calefacción, pero hay muchas áreas en el condado de Sussex en donde familias se han quedado sin electricidad. Y si piensas que somos desafortunados por el clima que hemos tenido, piensa que al sur de California las lluvias han desatado derrumbes que han arrebatado todo en su camino. Esto me lleva a pensar sobre la conversión de nieve a agua. Una vez me dijeron que 10 pulgadas de nieve equivalen a 1 pulgada de lluvia, y que entre más pesada la nieve es mayor contenido de humedad y a menos pulgadas de nieve por pulgadas de lluvia. Guau, con toda la nieve que ha caído imagínate el agua en la que se convertirá, sí alguna se evaporará y se derretirá, pero a la final será mucha la que se convertirá en agua. Mientras que escribo este artículo, Delaware está en sus segundo estado de emergencia gracias a la segunda gran tormenta de nieve que nos ha golpeado. Mañana tendremos que sacar nuestras palas y arreglar cualquier daño que la nieve pudo haber causado. Pero por ahora, solo puedo pensar en la canción de Julie Styne y Sammy Cahn en 1945 ... Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

I am not sure if you are wondering just as I am, but when will this snow stop? In my twenty-five years living in Delaware, I have not experienced this much snow. I agree that a couple of big storms have fallen here and there, but it is all said and done after the roads are cleaned up and then that’s it, you go on with your winter blues and daily activities. Somehow this winter, Mother Nature has decided that in our region, she would gift us with Blizzards. Not one, but two back-to-back blizzards that have left us with record breaking amounts of snow. Yes, I am sounding a little frustrated; I guess is the “cabin fever” I am experiencing and dealing with. Don’t get me wrong, I love a beautiful snowfall. I also enjoy playing in the snow making “snow angels” or running barefoot in my backyard just to feel young and alive, but this winter is getting to be a little too much for me. But if you know me, I try to stay positive and look at the brighter side of things and with that in mind, I have experienced some good fun. Yes, a few of my female friends, including my mother and daughter and myself included, put on our bathing suits and had pictures taken in the snow and posted in our Facebook pages. It all started as a dare in a game, but I am amazed of all the women and a few guys that did it and got in the game. Now, we are thinking of creating some type of calendar to remember the winter and blizzards of 2010. Needless to say, I have been fortunate to have electricity and heat, but there are many areas in Sussex County where many people have lost electricity.  And if you think we are unfortunate for the weather we are having, in Southern California they are experiencing rains and mudslides, destroying hundreds of houses and neighborhoods. Now that makes me think about the conversion of snow into water. I was once told that 10" of powder snow is equivalent of 1" of rainfall and that the heavier the snow the higher the moisture content and fewer the inches of snow per inch of rain. Wow, with all the snow it has fallen, imagine the amount of water this will turn into, yes, some will evaporate and melt, but when you think about it, it is still a lot snow that will turn into water. As I am writing this article, Delaware is in its second state of emergency due to the second blizzard that has hit our region. Tomorrow we will be left with more shoveling of snow and assessing the damage done by the tremendous amount of snow left behind. But for now, I can only think about the 1945 song that was created by composer Jule Styne and lyricist Sammy Cahn said…Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful, and since we've no place to go,  Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
