Robin Roberts, co-presentadora de ABCNEWS fue la oradora invitada par el evento de celebración del 40 Aniversario, llevado a cabo en el Teatro DuPont en Wilmington el viernes 10 de octubre

Durante la noche Roberts compartió con la audiencia su experiencia con el Cáncer de pecho así como sus influencias para llegar a ser una reportera

Inicio su charla explicando cuan rápido acepto la invitación para hablar en este evento especial, el 40 Aniversario del Centro Medico Henrietta Johnson.

Mencionó su pasión por los deportes y su sueño de ser una comentadora de deportes cuando era mas joven. Llamo a una estación de radio local diciendo que quería ser comentadora deportiva. Le permitieron entrar y hacerlo. Ella jugo siguió juego tras juego de escuela secundaria y béisbol. Este fue el inicio de su carrera.

Un dicho que estuvo repitiendo durante la noche fue, “Sueña en grandes, enfócate en lo pequeño.” Esta es la frase que la anima, ella sabia que haciendo esto, finalmente la llevaría a conseguir sus metas. Afirmó que, “todos tenemos nuestra formula personal para el éxito. Todos nos hemos colocado metas. Las hemos logrado. Solo recuerda los pasos que tomaste. Y ante cualquier reto que enfrentes, tú tienes la formula del éxito.”

Roberts habló sobre su descubrimiento del cáncer. Una noche, mientras se hacia un auto examen, notó un bulto en su pecho derecho. Inmediatamente llamó a su doctor para re pautar una cita que ya tenía para dentro de seis meses. Su doctor le dijo que no se podían cambiar la cita para una fecha mas cercana, así que hizo unas llamadas y pudo fijar una cita con el doctor de una amiga suya para el día siguiente. Recuerda que una amiga una vez le dijo que no había que esperar sino tomar acción de inmediato. Quería estar a salvo y lo estuvo. Los resultados de un ultrasonido detectaron un tumor. Le dijeron que tenia que hacerse una pruebas, y que se tomaría al menos un día para tener los resultados. Al día siguiente recibió una llamada de su doctor informándole que tenía cáncer. Remarcó lo aterrador que fue para ella. Al principio, lo mantuvo solo para su familia mas cercana y amigos, pero después de que su madre le dijo, “vas a hacer de tu desastre tu mensaje” se decidió a hacerlo público. Lo dijo en televisión y quedo sorprendida de ver el número de gente que respondió y compartió sus historias también.

Una o dos semanas después de que terminara la quimioterapia, algunos amigos la convencieron de salir de su ambiente seguro y participar en un desfile de modas. Antes de entrar en la pasarela, se quito la peluca, y cayo en cuanta de que estaba mas cómoda de lo que pensaba iba a estar. Cayo en cuenta que fue mas la incomodidad de los otros que la hacia colocarse la peluca para taparse la cabeza. Después de empezar el tratamiento decidió no usar nunca la peluca.

Mucha gente le ha pedido que escriba un libro sobre su experiencia. Ella, respetosamente declina la invitación por que siente que el cáncer no es mas que un capitulo en la historia de su vida. Sus palabras de cierre fuero, “Sueña en grande, enfócate en lo pequeño. Y sobre todo, mantén cera de tu corazón la confianza de tu familia y amigos.”

Robin Roberts, co-host of ABCNEWS was the key speaker in the 40-year Celebration event, held in the DuPont Theatre in Wilmington, on Friday, October 10^th.

Throughout the evening, Roberts shared with the audience her experience with Breast Cancer as well as her influences of becoming a news reporter.

She opens by stating how quickly she accepted the invitation to speak at this special event, the 40^th Anniversary of the Henrietta Johnson Medical Center.

She mentioned about her passion for sports and her dream to become a Sportscaster when she was younger. She called a local radio station and said she wanted to be a sportscaster. They allowed her to come in and do a sportscast. She did play-by-play for high school football and basketball games. That was the start of her broadcasting career.

A saying that she repeated numerous times throughout the evening was, “Dream big, focus small.” That is the phrase she stuck by, and she knew by doing this, it would ultimately lead her to accomplishing her goals. She states, “We all have our own personal formula for success. We all have set a goal for ourselves. We’ve reached it. Just remember the steps that you took. And whatever challenge then you are faced with, you have your formula for success.”

Roberts spoke of the discovery of her Cancer. One night, while giving herself a self-exam, she noticed a lump on her right breast. She immediately called her doctor to re-schedule an earlier appointment from the one originally scheduled six months away. Her doctor said the appointment could not be moved ahead, so she made calls and was able to make an appointment with one of her friend’s doctors the very next day. She remembered what a friend once told her about not waiting and taking action right away. So she wanted to be safe, and she did. Results of an ultrasound detected a tumor. She was told tests had to be run, and they would take about a day for the results to come in. The next day, she receives a call from her doctor informing her that she has cancer. She made remarks on how frightening it was for her. At first, she kept only her close family and friends involved, inspired to go public with it only after her mother told her, “You’re going to make your mess, your message”. She decided to put it on television and she was amazed by the number of people who responded and shared their story as well.

A week or two after completing her chemotherapy, she was convinced by friends to venture out of her comfort zone and enter a fashion show. Before entering the runway, she removed her wig, and realized that she was more comfortable then what she thought she would be. She noticed that it was more the discomfort of others that made her wear a wig and cover up her head. After starting radiation treatment she decided to go without a wig completely.

Many people requested that she write a book about her experience. She respectfully declined, because she feels that Cancer is no more than a chapter in her life story. Her closing remarks were, “Dream big, focus small. And above all, keep faith family and friends close to your heart.”
